Spaza Art Gallery

Spaza Art Gallery aims to be a community-based facility and  provide artists of all types from all over South Africa with a platform to showcase their work.

About Us

The Spaza Art Gallery was established in March 2001. It was founded by artist Andrew Lindsay, who during the mid-eighties worked in communities around the country creating murals. Later, from the mid-nineties, he started working in rural areas, where he encountered many young, mostly self-taught artists, and thereafter started the gallery to give these artists a chance to show their work in the big city. Over time, the gallery gained momentum, widening its network of artists and patrons and eventually becoming a colourful addition to the Jozi art scene. The space has also become a venue for different forms of cultural activity, hosting many poetry gatherings, live music events and Sunday lunches over the years. It truly became a "spaza" gallery in 2015, when the old gallery space was refashioned as an Airbnb property and all artworks become housed in a shack in the garden.

This move to an online shop is part our ongoing metamorphosis. We WELCOME YOU, and look forward to seeing you here more often.
